Palm Tree Swimming Pool Closing

Pool closing time is usually a sad time of year.  The weather is getting cold, the leaves are changing color and the warm memories of summertime fun are fading away.  This is not usually the time of year that people like to think about their swimming pools, but this is really the most important time of the year to pay attention to the pool to avoid unnecessary problems and costly repairs come Springtime.

  • Locate all your winterizing supplies.  This should include the cover, the air pillow, the plugs for the skimmers ( gizzmos or rubber plugs ), the winter plate ( if used ) and your winterizing chemicals.  You need these items for proper winterization.
  • Backwash the filter very well to clean it out.   Drain DE filter tanks and leave backwash valve open.  On sand filters, unplug the filter drain plug and leave off. Put drain plug with other removed items in the pump basket. Make sure multiport valve ( if any ) has no water in it.
  • Plug return pipes and skimmer ( see # 5 for skimmer details ) and remove all hoses.
  • Disconnect your pump and filter.  Make sure that pump is totally drained out of any water. Turn pump upside down once to make sure !   Remove any drain plugs from the pump.  It is a good idea to store any small plugs or parts in the pump basket.
  • Some people like to remove the skimmer box and install a winter plate with gaskets.  If you do this, make sure it does not leak.  Yes, you will get wet doing this !  Most people simply plug the skimmer hole with a black rubber plug or a gizzmo.
  • Blow up and install your air pillow.  Air pillows are usually used but are not absolutely necessary.  They are a good idea in case the water in the pool freezes, expands, and breaks the pool wall. The pillow takes up the slack.  However realize that this is somewhat rare. If no pillow is available, you can use tires, tubes, balls, or other air filled floating objects.
  • Remove all deck equipment from pool, if any (ladders, rails, slides, etc.).
  • Add chemicals. Mix any granular winterizing chemicals in a bucket so that they are totally dissolved. Dump mixture into the pool. You want to avoid any undissolved granules from settling on the pool floor and staining the liner.
  • Place cover on pool and secure. Make sure that cover cable wire is tight so that cover does not blow off or fall in pool. Make sure the pillow is still in the middle of the pool after cover installation. If not, reset cover and pillow.

Swimming Pool and Spa Leak Detection

Depending on the region and climate in which you live, it may not be uncommon for your pool water level to vary from day to day. Environmental factors such as humidity, wind, and air as well as water temperature can have an effect, causing you to lose up to ¼ inch of water a day or about 2 inches per week.

You may have a leak if:

  • Pool has air in the system
  • Equipment loses prime
  • You see cracks
  • Pool deck is sinking or lifting
  • There are soggy spots around the pool
  • You add water more than once a week
  • Pool loses more than regular evaporation

Preparing your pool for a professional leak detection

Clean Not Green

In most cases, it is recommended to have the pool vacuumed spotless prior to your detection. Leaks as large as 1″ in diameter have been missed until the dirt covering them was vacuumed or brushed away. Make sure the water is clean and not green. If it is green, the water could contain molds, fungus, larvae, and other contaminants that could make you sick, besides making it almost impossible to test.

Have the following information ready when you call to schedule your professional pool leak detection

  • Is it a pool only or does it also have a spa?
  • Is the pool equipment above or below ground?
  • How many pumps?
  • Is the pool constructed of fiberglass, gunite, marcite, or vinyl?
  • How many skimmers?
  • Does it leak more with the filter on or with it off?
  • How much water does it lose over a 24-hour period?

Palm Tree Pools Liner Replacement

Draining Your Pool: Ideally, the pool should not be drained until very shortly prior to installation of the new liner. This reduces the chance of a cave-in or the material beneath the liner drying out. If the pool must be drained to measure for a new liner, the old liner should be put back into place as best as possible to keep the sun from drying out the sand or vermiculite base.

Removing the Old Liner: First, using a knife or a pair of scissors, cut out from around all fittings (lights, skimmer, return lines, etc.) thus freeing the liner from these areas. Next, check the liner track which is at the top of the pool wall. If the liner track is aluminum, you will probably see a gray locking strip around the perimeter of the pool at the very top edge of the liner.

Cleaning The Track:
The liner track must be free of debris in order for the new liner to properly fit into it.

Creating An Air Seal:
Using Duck Tape or Silicone Sealant, seal all cracks in fiberglass and wood walled pools. Concrete and block walled pools will already be sufficiently air tight.

Removing Fittings: At this time, you are ready to remove the face plates from the fittings. This is a very important phase as you want to make sure all the face plates will go back in securely when the new liner is installed.

Inspect Your Pool Wall: All burrs, etc. which may protrude into the new liner should be removed from the pool wall. You can flat blade the pool wall with a steel trowel and generally knock debris loose. Bad lumps may require grinding or rubbing with a concrete block.

Preparing The Pool Base: The pool base must also be free of all items that would protrude into the liner. In the case of a sand bottom, remove all rocks and foreign matter, wet the sand and trowel into place. A Bull nosed, steel floats work best for trowling.

Installing The Liner: If there are inside gaskets on the flanges of the pool fittings, secure them in place. Place the liner box at the shallow end of the pool with the arrows pointing toward the deep end.

Aligning Your Liner: Align the deep end corners first. In the case of rectangular pools, boomerang shaped pools, or pools with corners of any kind, alignment should begin at these corners.

Vacuum Fitting The Liner: Using a Wet-Dry-Shop vacuum, remove the deck plate and run the suction hose down through the skimmer and out approximately 18″ through the mouth of the skimmer, so that the suction hose is between the pool wall and the liner.

Filling The Pool: Only when the above conditions have been satisfied should filling of the pool begin. Leave the vacuum running and begin filling. If the pool has a main drain, allow about 18″ to 24″ of water to accumulate at the deep end before securing the face plate to it.

Continuation Of Filling: Allow the pool to fill until the water level is high enough on the pool wall so that the liner is tight against the wall all around. AT THIS TIME, you may turn the vacuum off and remove the suction hose.

Salt Water Pool Info

Salt water swimming pool technology has come a long way in the last few years. With all of the equipment manufacturers marketing these systems today, we have had a good opportunity to see how these systems perform in the field. Over the past couple of years Palm Tree Pools has come to offer two brands of salt water pool chlorination, the Pentair IntelliChlor, or the Goldline Aqua Rite depending on each specific installation. We offer these two brands knowing that they are more easily diagnosed and maintainable for the home owner, or service person.

The team here at Palm Tree Pools is firm believers that swimming pools and swimming pool owners will benefit greatly with the advantages of having salt water pool automation. Whether you choose the Pentair IntelliChlor or the Goldline Aqua Rite these two chlorine generators offer clear sparkling water, reduced eye and skin irritation, and you no longer have to store excess chemical. The chlorine is produced by the salt daily dependant on the pool’s chlorine needs, reducing chemical maintenance. This is going to give the swimming pool or spa a steady stream of chlorine rather than spiking it once a week and then having it go low a few days later.
